Blue Light and Skin

Blue Light and Skin

In order to identify one another, we need to see each other, recognize faces and memorize

how each individual looks. We are all pretty in some or the other way and, the crucial

component of the face is, the skin that makes it. Depending on the origin of an individual, we

have varying skin types. But have you ever wondered whether we are taking adequate steps

to ensure that our skin stays healthy? Now that the question has arised, let’s revisit the skin’s

friends and foes.

To maintain healthy, glowing and young skin, one must wash the skin daily, have a set

frequency of washing depending on the skin type and lifestyle of the individual, eat fresh

fruits, vegetables, and natural foods. All these are friends of our skin. Talking about it’s foes,

the list may be a never ending one. People are aware of the harmful effects of pollution,

unhealthy diet and lifestyle and ultraviolet rays on the skin. But, a big culprit in the form of

‘blue light’ still manages to camouflage itself.

What is the Blue light?

It is one of the seven colours that make up the white light seen by us. It has a high energy

and a short wavelength and is not the same as the UVA or UVB light. The major source of

this light is the Sun, however, the indoor house lights (commonly LED lights), electronic

devices such as television, smartphones, tablets, laptops, are also sources of the blue light.

So, how exactly is the blue light a culprit?

Well, though the scientific world is still gathering enough evidence regarding the ill effects

of this light, many studies have shown that blue light exposure has alarming consequences.

Technological advances have been a part of our lives for quite some time but, the recent

pandemic has forced most of us to stay indoors, work from home and expose ourselves to

such light. That is why knowing the effects of blue light and enabling ways to curb them is

pivotal to our well being.

Outcomes of blue light exposure:

This light has differing outcomes on the human body. Let us take a look at the benefits to

start on a positive note;

It has shown to boost alertness

Improve memory and cognitive function

Kill acne causing bacteria, to name a few

The detrimental effects however are more in number. Blue light has been a cause of eye

damage, affecting the photoreceptors of the eye. This light also induces sleep disorders and

is especially harmful in the event of the prevalent global health crisis, where most of the

people are glued to their mobile and laptop screens, staying awake late at night to finish

work.
